EUGENE FARRAR
Establishing a warm, empathic and accepting relationship is at the heart of my counselling approach. As an integrative counsellor I draw on different Humanistic models including, Person-centred, existential and Gestalt approaches. I work in a collaborative way, enabling people to explore their feelings, and to empower themselves to bring change to their lives. The pace and pressures of modern life can present many sources of emotional pain, including low self-esteem, grief, loss, relationships, abuse, identity, addiction, and anxiety.

I’m an integrative counsellor who places the therapeutic relationship at the centre of my work. I offer a warm, empathic, and accepting space where you can explore your experiences at a pace that feels right for you. My practice is rooted in a Person‑Centred approach. I also draw on existential, Gestalt, Solution‑Focused, and Narrative therapies where they may support your process. This flexible way of working allows us to shape therapy around your unique needs. Together, we can explore what matters most to you, reconnect with your strengths, deepen self‑understanding, and build a greater sense of agency.

I hold a PGdip and a Master’s degree in Integrative Humanistic Counselling from York St John University. This training underpins my relational and compassionate approach, helping me create a space where you can feel genuinely met, understood, and supported as you navigate both challenges and possibilities.

I work with individuals facing a variety of challenge, including low self‑worth, relationship strain, identity concerns, anxiety, grief, loss, and addictive behaviours. My approach is warm, non‑judgemental, and attentive to the emotional and relational patterns that can sit beneath distress. I aim to offer a grounded, supportive space where you feel genuinely met and understood as you move through life’s complexities.

Bereavement Work
I have specific training and experience in bereavement therapy, supporting people as they navigate grief in all its forms. My work in a specialist bereavement service and a busy community counselling organisation involved accompanying individuals through some of the most painful and transformative periods of their lives. I offer a steady, compassionate presence as you make sense of your loss and begin to find your own unique  way forward.

Addiction Work
I also have particular experience in supporting people affected by addiction, including difficulties arising from gambling, whether you’re navigating your own struggles or the addictions of those close to you. I work sensitively with the shame, isolation, and ambivalence that can accompany addictive patterns, helping you reconnect with your agency and develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Therapy can be the beginning of a meaningful healing process. While it may feel challenging at times, it can also offer moments of insight, hope, and transformation. I feel privileged to share in this work and to offer steadiness and warmth as you navigate whatever arises along the way.

My background

Before training as a therapist, I studied Creative and Community Arts at Newcastle Polytechnic, followed by careers in both musical performance, and social work. I also navigated my own experiences of mental health and addiction. These early chapters shaped my belief in the healing power of relational, non‑judgemental, empathic support and continue to inform the way I meet people in the therapy room.

Alongside my clinical work, I am actively involved in research focused on improving men’s access to mental health support. As part of a research team at York St John University, I explore the barriers men face when seeking help and how these might be reduced. I have also published and presented research examining gambling‑related harm and suicide, and the ways these experiences affect both individuals and those close to them, including the layers of grief that can unfold.
